The New York Mets haven't had the greatest season, but things are certainly looking up, and the All-Star game could be the start of something special.
Third baseman David Wright will start at the hot corner for the NL, and he will receive a raucous reception from the hometown fans. Wright knows how the dimensions of Citi Field play better than perhaps anyone, so he is also in position to vie for the MVP award.



No Met has been named MVP of the All-Star Game since pitcher Jon Matlack in 1975, so history isn't on Wright's side.
Wright is having a spectacular season, though, as he is hitting .304 with 13 home runs and 44 RBI, so he is clearly a candidate. If the National League wins this game, it could very well be largely due to Wright's contributions.
It's hard to imagine that Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera could be having a better season this year than last, when he won the Triple Crown, but that is exactly what is happening.
Cabrera has been on an absolute tear all season long, as he is hitting .365 with 30 home runs and 95 RBI. He's currently on pace to blast more than 50 homers and 160 RBI, which would be one of the greatest seasons in MLB history.

Teams simply can't get Cabrera out on a consistent basis, which is why he already has 60 walks to his credit as well. There usually aren't too many intentional walks in the All-Star game, so Cabrera will likely get some pitches to hit.
It's very rare to see Cabrera miss when something is in his wheelhouse, and with the way he is swinging the bat, an All-Star MVP award could join his crowded mantel soon.

As good as Cabrera has been, it could be argued that Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is swinging an even hotter bat right now.
Davis has homered in four consecutive games leading up to the Midsummer Classic, and he leads the league in jacks with 37. He also has a .315 batting average and 93 RBI to boot, which puts him on Cabrera's level when it comes to the American League MVP race. Davis and Cabrera will likely be in direct competition for the MVP award in the All-Star game, too.
Davis is currently on pace to hit 62 home runs, which would be the fourth-highest total in MLB history behind Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
Since all three of those players are connected to performance-enhancing drugs, though, Davis may be viewed as the true home run king if he sets the mark.
His main focus right now is playing well in the All-Star Game, though, which shouldn't be a problem.
