What they got was a home side who were determined to be the perfect hosts - Argentina for some reason electing to go for a running game rather than reprising the tight approach that almost reaped them dividends in the Wellington rain a few weeks earlier.

And rather than the wildly threatening atmosphere many predicted, it was instead a carnival of goodwill in the stands - the All Blacks receiving a standing ovation after the 54-15 victory which secured them the title.

A laser shone in the eyes of Aaron Cruden as he lined up a late shot at goal. That had the potential to leave a slightly sour taste but coach Steve Hansen was keen to smooth the waters afterwards, saying it wasn't a big deal.

However, the alleged actions of two Argentines in their recent 22-17 defeat to the Springboks in Mendoza suggest the All Blacks would do well to be on guard once again.

In what has soured an excellent response to their 13-73 thrashing of a week earlier in Soweto, flanker Pablo Matera has been cited for eye gouging and No8 Leonardo Senatore cited for biting.
Both incidents occurred within minutes of each in the second half - Springboks flanker Francois Louw the alleged victim of Matera's actions and lock Eben Etzebeth reacting angrily to an alleged bite on the arm by Senatore.
Both incidents were referred to the TMO by referee Steve Walsh, but inconclusive footage meant no action was taken during the game - the Sanzar citing commissioner deciding both reached the red card threshold for foul play and requiring of further investigation.
If found guilty, both players face a long spell on the sidelines.
The International Rugby Board places biting alongside testicle grabbing in terms of seriousness, with eye gouging not far behind.
Both Matera and Senatore face bans of between 12 and 24 weeks if the decisions go against them. The maximum ban for biting is four years.
The recent developments are unfortunate for coach Santiago Phelan and his assistants, including Graham Henry.
The Argentines have been a breath of fresh air in what was becoming a stale Tri Nations format and ill-discipline when their playing stocks are already limited was the one thing they did not need.
Morne Steyne's goalkicking got South Africa home in the final minutes in Mendoza thanks to other indiscretions by the Pumas - this time spotted by Walsh - in the wrong part of the field.
With Dan Carter likely to be fit for the match at Waikato Stadium a week on Saturday after missing the All Blacks' opening Rugby Championship victories over Australia which retained the Bledisloe Cup for his team, Argentina cannot afford to create a reputation for dirty play.
The boot of Carter - or Beauden Barrett - could quickly put the match beyond them.

Scrums
The first couple of scrums were awkward to say the least, but as the game wore on this became less of an issue as the teams got into their rhythm and found their timing.
The Wallabies found the initial scrums to be to their liking and clearly won them, with James Slipper in particular doing some good work against Owen Franks.
However, as the All Blacks found their timing, they managed to start cranking up the pressure and won the overall scrum battle. 
Something interesting was that it was easier to see which front row was collapsing the scrum and this can only be a good thing.

 

Match stats – Australia had six scrums, won two and lost four. New Zealand had six scrums, won three and lost three.
Ewen McKenzie – “The scrum was a bit of a lottery for both teams, so a bit of a mixed bag there.”
Steve Hansen – “I thought the scrums were great … we’ve just created another wee issue, haven’t we? Once we get that sorted out and the halfbacks put the ball in straight, we’ll be fine.
“Obviously, at the moment, they are being very, very vigilant on it. You had two sets of halfbacks out there who, every time there was a scrum, were very reluctant to put the ball in because they didn’t want to be yellow-carded.
“But I think it’s like anything: we said there would be some teething problems, but the great thing about it, I thought, was we didn’t have too many collapses so, once we iron out the whole thing and get used to it, I think it will be great for the game.”

Lineouts
The Wallabies selected four jumpers and it paid off in style. They clearly dominated the lineouts, with Ben Mowen providing some good calls (Sam Whitelock could not read the lineouts to compete Wallaby ball) and Rob Simmons impressing in the air.
It was surprising the Wallabies did not take more advantage by not kicking the ball out more in the second half and mauling more than the two times they did.
The All Blacks will be disappointed with their lineout work and will look for some dramatic improvement for the next Test.
They lost ball in almost every way possible – opposition steals, not straight throws, and overthrows, with Kevin Mealamu being responsible for these failures.
Match stats – Australia had nine lineouts, won nine. New Zealand had 12 lineouts, won eight, lost four.
Restarts
Neither side had a great day at the restart. Both lost three restarts by my count and failed to disrupt opposition ball (other than the steal each).
Breakdown
The first half was fairly even, with the All Blacks perhaps edging it.
The second half was a different story however, with the All Blacks hitting the rucks with some real venom.
This was where the Wallabies lost the game for me and they will need to make some personnel changes because the current guys lack the mongrel to clean out rucks consistently.
Brodie Retallick, Whitelock and Franks were superb and completely outplayed their counterparts in this area.
The Wallabies were also far too individual when approaching the rucks too as opposed to the All Blacks who were more coordinated.
The result was quicker ball for the All Blacks and they were able to slow the Wallaby ball down almost at will.
Match stats – Australia won 94 from 100 rucks, New Zealand won 54 from 59 rucks.
Kicking
The ABs kicked the ball more often than the Wallabies did and edged the kicking battle by being more effective with their kicks and kick chases.
The Wallabies must look to return the ball with more purpose to put doubts in to the minds of the All Black kickers.
None of the Wallaby back three really returned the ball with any great deal of effectiveness and Mackenzie has already suggested moving Israel Folau to fullback to bring the big fella more into the game and perhaps return All Black kicks better.
How that will affect their kicking game remains to be seen.
Match stats – Kick/pass/run – Australia – 20/180/121, New Zealand – 29/76/82.
Kicks at goal – Australia – seven from eight, New Zealand – seven from nine.
General play and gameplan
McKenzie promised and delivered a more expansive gameplan. The Wallabies basic attack consisted of passing the ball two out from Toomua and taking the hit, which partly resulted in Conrad Smith making the most tackles of any All Black back (10).
They then either recycled the ball and continued down the blindside or switched the play quickly. It worked to a certain degree, with the Wallabies looking more penetrative than they have in the recent past.
Their failure to capitalise on the line breaks they did make will be of concern and they will look to improve their support running lines. The All Blacks contained the Wallaby attacks with some ease though and this will worry the Wallabies.
The All Blacks targeted the right side of the field by flooding James O’Connor’s wing and starving Folau. This paid off spectacularly, with Ben Smith running in a hat-trick on the right wing.
Aaron Cruden ran the ball far more than Toomua did, which helped in creating space outside him when he did shift the ball on.
As always though, the All Black forwards looked for general dominance and there were plenty of pick and gos and one out runs.
Soft fringe defence resulted in plenty of gain line advances.

Former All Blacks coach Graham Henry’s assistant coach role to Argentina should start to show through this year, and a new attacking mind-set should permeate the team if they’re to match SA, NZ and Australia.
The Argentineans have gone for a team with a lot of experience, with the veteran Felipe Contepomi coming into centre and the unpredictably talented Juan Martin Hernandez making his return to fullback.
Leguizamon, Albacete and Matera will provide some bulk in their ball-carrying department, and in traditional Argentinean fashion, the front row will be a hard-fought area of the game.

The Argentine bench features some great strike runners in the form of Santiago Fernandez and Horacio Agulla, who will surely lend their dangerous running skills to the latter half of the match.

As for the Boks, Duane Vermeulen makes his return from injury and will don the number 8 jersey in the starting lineup, while Willem Alberts gets the nod to start on the side of the scrum and Juandre Kruger in the starting lock position.

The backline features the familiar faces from the June tests, who proved to work well together and are evidently able to score some impressive tries.

The bench sees Guthro Steenkamp enter the game again, while Siya Kolisi and the returning Fourie du Preez add some new excitement and experience respectively.

It’s clear that Meyer wants to make sure that the Boks meet the Pumas’ physicality, and with the selection of big forwards and backs, the South Africans should keep their composure.

Rugby Informer’s take: the Pumas would have learnt a lot from last year’s tournament, and will playing every match like a World Cup final to warrant their place. That said, the Boks should be too good and full of confidence in Soweto, giving them the edge from the get-go. Springboks by 10.

After defying the odds and beating the Bulls in Pretoria with a last gasp win, the Brumbies have been riding a wave of emotion this week as they try and prepare for the teams biggest game since 2004. The travel factor of coming back from South Africa and only a short preparation time weigh heavily against them but this is a team that was given little chance when they went to Pretoria. Coach Jake White says for the team to make the final in only his second year in charge is way beyond his expectations but shows just how far the team has come under his leadership. Just two years ago they had one of the worst seasons ever finishing in 13th place and lost a whole host of players with Super Rugby experience to be replaced with fringe squad members and club rugby players.

Fast forward two years, and it’s clear to see the results of the hard work the team has put in. Back then the team had only three Wallabies representatives and now they have twelve players heading off to Wallabies camp which starts next week. The victory over the Bulls was built on the back of a dominant scrum lead by Scott Sio and they will need to bring that same intensity to Hamilton if they are to cause an upset. The Brumbies scrum has turned into a real weapon to the point of being a source of points through penalty goals in the attacking half. The backline with Matt Toomua in charge has been exceptional this year. They proved in the Bulls game that they can mix it up and took advantage of limited chances in the second half and didn’t panic. The back three can be as good as any other on their day but they will have to be on their game to get over the Chiefs who also possess a deadly back three.

The kicking game from the Brumbies will be crucial to give them the field position they need to get the job done. With rain expected in downtown Hamilton, the forwards battle will be one to watch with whoever gaining the upper hand in this area will go a long way to winning the title. The Brumbies have named an unchanged lineup that includes George Smith and Clyde Rathbone, the remaining members of the last title winning Brumbies side from 2004. On the way to the title that year the Brumbies did beat the Chiefs in the semi-final so hopefully history repeats in 2013. Standing in their way of glory are the reigning champions, the Chiefs. The home side will be raging favourites after knocking off the Crusaders in an exciting semi-final by one point and they have had the luxury of staying at home all week and the extra day of recovery and preparation at this point of the season would be like gold. The potential for back-to-back titles also adds motivation for the home side.

The home side has had some injury concerns during the week with Lelia Masaga the worst of those but coach Dave Rennie has so far named an unchanged lineup for the match. Masaga is one of many Chiefs players leaving the team after this match so there is no doubt he will be given every opportunity to make the game, especially after his devastating run that lead to a try in last weeks fixture. He has been bracketed with Robbie Robinson on the wing should he not be right for the game. The key to beating the Chiefs, as obvious as it sounds, will be to starve them of the ball. The Chiefs tend to do a lot with very little and they scored the most points and the most tries in 2013 despite having possession of the ball the least of all 15 teams. Veteran hooker Corey Flynn admits Queensland's 2011 Super Rugby success still pains the Crusaders and they're bracing for a Reds side that can rock their Christchurch fortress on Saturday.

Despite the Crusaders' red-hot form and favouritism at a packed-out AMI Stadium, Flynn is wary about what the underdone Queenslanders can produce in their qualifying final.

The Reds haven't won in Christchurch for 14 years but they've succeeded in three of their past four meetings and believe the seven-time champions bring out their best.

That was certainly true in 2011 when Queensland upset the Crusaders 17-16 with a last-minute penalty goal, and also triumphed 18-13 with a late Will Genia try in the competition decider.

Although the Reds no longer have game-breaking Wallabies Scott Higginbotham and Digby Ioane (shoulder), Flynn believed the firepower remained.

"They have some great players in that team and we're not taking them for granted," the former All Blacks rake told AAP.

"In recent times they have had the wood on us and we were lucky enough to get over them last year (15-11).

"You've got guys in that Reds team who can score from anywhere on the field.

"If Quade (Cooper) decides to run at us and he has some space then good luck to you.

"Likewise with DC (Dan Carter). There's pretty special players across the board for both teams.

"And it does bring that Test match intensity."

That 2011 final still grates with almost all Cantabrians after they were forced to play on the road all season after the Christchurch earthquake reduced their home stadium to a rubble.

The Crusaders produced some of the best rugby seen in the competition's history but weren't helped by the constant travel which continued in the finals when they travelled from Cape Town to Brisbane for the decider.

"The boys that were involved will look back on (the achievement with fondness) in years to come, but it's still a little bit raw and a wee pea under the mattress," Flynn said.

The ability of the under-rated Reds scrum to effectively clear their own ball against the menacing Crusaders pack in the past has also seen Todd Blackadder go to school on how they can assert set-piece dominance.

"We've had to look at other ways to try and combat it and attack them," Flynn said. "It's made us have a real good look at ourselves."

The Crusaders are the form team entering the play-offs on the back of five straight wins, including three impressive showings since they fine-tuned their game plan during the June Test break.

Queensland, in contrast, have had just last week's rusty 14-12 win over NSW together since the Lions Test series.

On the basis of the Crusaders' pre-match talk, Reds coaching boss Ewen McKenzie is tipping Carter will kick for field position and ask his team to roll the dice in attack.

"If you read between the lines they will try to get us to play out of our half," he said.

"Discipline will be important and where you are going to play the game is going to be important."
